Vitamin D Supplements Shown to Reduce Influenza Infections

Wow! – AND its cheap, simple, and safe to take Vitamin D supplements at 1,000 to 2,000 international units (IU) per day! Now there’s a treatment! Increased infection fighting peptides, reduced inflammation, and stronger bones too! Too good to be true.

It is clear from scientific studies that the rate of infection with influenza is correlated with the level of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D is a precursor to natural steroids in the body that reduces inflammation and thereby help fight complications of infections that cause excess inflammation like influenza. Vitamin D has also been shown to reduce the rate of infection with influenza after exposure for unknown reasons as explained below. Vitamin D is produced in the skin when exposed to sunlight. It is clear that the recommended levels of Vitamin D in our diets are too low, especially in view of recommendations in recent years to avoid sun exposure.

In a hospital for the criminally insane in 2005 it was noted that  patients on a ward receiving a supplement of 2,000 international units of Vitamin D  per day didn’t get sick when an influenza epidemic went through the hospital. It is also known that influenza rates decrease in the summer. A higher level of Vitamin D in the population from seasonal sun exposure may explain this.

The proper amount of Vitamin D required daily is up to 5,000 IU a day. It would be prudent for anyone, especially with limited sun exposure to take supplemental Vitamin D of 1,000-2,000 IU year round. This may help protect the population as a whole from influenza.

Well, you can get (and I take) pills containing 50,000 IU of vitamin D. Vitamin D also protects against tuberculosis and reduces the severity of diabetes.

Why not get your vitamin D level checked out for $40 at Grassrootshealth D Action.
It’s part of a research trial to find the vitamin d level associated with least chronic illness.
Very easy test, Just 2 drops of blood required. Spring loaded lancet provided. You post the sample strip back. They email a link to the results in a few days.

If you want to have reserves of D3 stored in your muscle and fat cells to fight the flu you have to raise the intake to MORE vitamin D than your body uses daily.
Every day our body’s really need 5000iu.
So to have MORE than your body really wants to use each day you have to intake MORE than 5000iu.
Up to 10,000iu/daily is safe even where there is plenty of sun available.
Best idea is to take 5000iu/daily for 3 months while getting reasonable sun exposure.
Then get tested to see how you’ve done.
Then adjust your intake by 1000iu/day for each EXTRA 10ng/mL you need to go up to get to 55ng/mL or reduce your intake by 1000iu/d for each 10ng/mL you need to reduce to get back to 55ng/mL.
But if you have a chronic ilness, like cancer – heart disease-MS Diabetes it may be better to stay in the 60~70ng/mL range as that ensures you always have some spare d3 stores to call on if required.
